With a wet spell setting in bringing rainfall to nearly all divisions from Thursday, the heatwave that started on March 27 disappeared on Friday, 15 days after its onset.

The highest maximum day temperature of 35.5C was recorded in Chuadanga and Sandwip on Friday, just below the temperature threshold required for heatwave— 36C.

‘Almost all the divisions witnessed rainfall on Thursday,’ said meteorologist Shaheenul Islam.

The next two to three days are likely to be particularly wet in Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet, he said, with the wet spell engulfing entire Bangladesh, except the coastal area.

‘We predict rainfall to continue until April 21,’ said Shaheen.

The wet spell is triggered by the weather system fuelling thunderstorms at this time of year that are often accompanied by lightning, strong wind and hailstorms.

The forecast comes as a relief to people and the government as well. Lower temperature meant less electricity demand and suffering. With high humidity heatwaves can be punishing for people in the country.
