
At least 10 people were injured as two factions of Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders and activists at Baraigram upazila in Natore clashed over bringing out a procession to protest at the Israeli atrocities against Palestinian people on Friday evening.
Of the injured, activist Jahidul Islam was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital with serious injuries while activists Jewel, Motaleb, and Shariful were admitted to Natore Sadar Hospital.
According to the local people and the police, a group of the BNP and its affiliated organisations’ leaders and activists led by Joari union Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal president Ranju Ali and BNP activist Masud Rana brought out a procession from Kamardaha Bazar under the sadar upazila, condemning the Israeli atrocities against Palestinian people on Friday afternoon.
Following the procession, when Masud and his followers attempted to set an effigy of the Israeli prime minister on fire in the evening, Liton Mia, a BNP activist from the other faction led by BNP leader Ariful Islam Arif, made derogatory remarks.
When Banpara Degree College lecturer Mizanur Rahman, also a follower of Masud Rana group protested, Liton locked into an altercation with him.
Later, the duo group locked into a clash that began at about 6:30pm and continued until around 9:00pm, leaving at least 10 people from both sides injured.
On information, Baraigram police and the army personnel rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Ali Akbar, member secretary of Baraigram upazila BNP and also the chairman of Joari union parishad, said that after August 5, a faction of the local BNP leaders and activists got involved in various misdeeds including, beating, extorting and looting people.
‘Everyone knows about their misdeeds,’ he said, adding that it seems that everyone is a leader now.
Mahbubur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Baraigram police, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the clash ensued at the Kamardaha Bazar between the two factions of the BNP following previous enmity.
‘After the clash, both the factions of the local BNP filed two separate complaints with the police station and we have already arrested BNP leader Ariful Islam Airf for his involvement in the clash,’ he added.
