A Dhaka court on Sunday convicted and sentenced Mizan Sardar to death for murdering his wife Rupa Akter by pouring hot oil on her while she was asleep.
The incident took place in 2023 at Kadamtali Khalpar area in the capital.
Judge Munshi Moshiar Rahman of Dhaka women and children repression prevention tribunal-4 pronounced the judgment in the presence of the convict and sent him back to jail with a conviction warrant.
The court also fined Mizan, from village Baburhat of the Nazirpur police station in Pirojpur, Tk 1,00,000.
According to case documents, Rupa and Mizan were married in 2013 and had two children. Mizan frequently physically abused Rupa, demanding dowry. To protect his daughter from Mizan鈥檚 cruelty, Rupa鈥檚 father gave him a piece of land and a shop.
On May 6, 2023, Mizan tortured Rupa again, demanding more dowries. At about 3:00am, while Rupa and her two children were asleep, Mizan heated some cooking oil in a frying pan and poured it on Rupa. The building鈥檚 caretaker heard Rupa鈥檚 screams, rescued her and her children to the burn unit at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Rupa died to her injuries on May 25.
Before her death, Rupa made a dying declaration before Dhaka judicial magistrate Sheikh Muzahidul Islam on May 14. Accused Mizan Sardar also gave a confessional statement in court.
