
Chattogram-based cultural organisation Sammilita Pahela Baishakh Udjapan Parishad on Sunday cancelled Bengali new year celebration event as the stage set up for programme was vandalised by miscreants in the port city.
Convener of the platform, Sucharit Das Kokhon said that they postponed the event which was scheduled to be held today morning marking Pahela Baishakh over security concerns.
A group of 30 to 40 miscreants on Sunday night vandalised Baishakh celebration stage at DC Hill in Chattogram, reported ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· Staff Correspondent in Chattogram.
Sammilita Pahela Baishak Udjapan Parishad member secretary Md Ali Titu alleged that the miscreants came chanting the slogan ‘accomplice of fascist, beware!’ and vandalised the stage.
‘On Sunday evening a group of people came to the venue and vandalised the stage, sound system and banners. Although the police were on duty at the venue, they were not able to resist them,’ said Kokhon, adding that the district administration gave a lot of conditions before the incident happened.
‘The authorities concerned ordered to reduce the number of participating groups between 10 to 15 from the performance list on Sunday afternoon, which was difficult for us at the last moment,’ said Kokhon, adding that the authorities permitted to organise the event from 7:00am to 4:00pm while the platform organising daylong cultural event since 1978 at the DC hill.
Kotwali police station officer-in-charge Abdul Karim said that a group of people came with a procession and vandalised the stage.
‘There were some police personnel on duty there. The police tried to stop them. We have picked up six for questioning,’ said Karim.
