
The protesting students of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology on Tuesday demanded resignation of the university’s vice-chancellor, professor Mohammad Mashud.
The KUET authorities on Monday night decided to temporarily expel 37 students for their involvement in a recent clash over a ban on student politics, resume all academic activities from May 4 and reopen residence halls on May 2.
Protesting at the decisions, a section of KUET students on Tuesday entered some halls by breaking locks after daylong protests.
Supporting them, the students of Dhaka University, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and the Bangladesh Democratic Student Council held separate protest rallies in Dhaka the same day.
A press release, issued by the KUET authorities on Tuesday night, said that even after the authorities had decided to reopen the halls from May 2 some students broke the locks and entered the halls – which is a clear violation of the university and the country’s laws.
The authorities urged the students to respect the existing laws of the country.Â
Earlier, student politics on the campus was banned on August 11, 2024.
Later on February 19 this year, the KUET authorities upheld its previous decision to ban student politics following a clash on February 18 between Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Students Against Discrimination that had left over 100 injured.
Since February 25 this year the KUET also suspended all academic activities.
A probe committee, formed to investigate the February 18 clash, submitted its report at the 101th syndicate meeting held on Monday night and based on that the decisions including expulsion of 37 students were taken, said a press release issued by the KUET authorities.
Since Tuesday morning the KUET students had staged demonstrations on the campus and at a press briefing held at around 2:00pm they announced their one-point demand for resignation of the vice-chancellor for failure to provide security to the students, for instigating filing cases against the students and for expelling the students.
After that some students broke locks of some halls.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Dhaka University reported that a group of DU students on Tuesday held a protest rally on the campus demanding resignation of the KUET vice-chancellor over the expulsion of 37 students and immediate withdrawal of the ‘false’ cases filed against KUET students.
At a press conference held at DU’s Madhur Canteen, leaders of the Bangladesh Democratic Student Council alleged that on February 18, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and activists of Juba Dal from outside attacked general students at KUET and demanded resignation of the vice-chancellor within next 24 hours.
At BUET, a section of students held a human chain in front of the BUET Shaheed Minar where they demanded withdrawal of all cases against the KUET students and condemned the role of the KUET authorities.
