The education ministry has cancelled its orders by which two deceased teachers were mistakenly promoted to principals of two public colleges.
Earlier on April 8, the Secondary and Higher Education Division under the ministry published three lists of 135 teachers under the Bangladesh Civil Service general education cadre, promoting them to principals in different government colleges.
Of them, Kurigram Government College’s physics professor Mohammad Jamal Uddin and Carmichael College’s history professor Md Abdul Muttalib died over a year ago.
Correcting its mistake, the division on April 10 issued a circular saying that it cancelled the order promoting the two teachers.
Professor Jamal was transferred to Mir Ismail Hossain College in Kurigram and Professor Muttalib was transferred to Pirgachha College in Rangpur, both promoted to principals.
Kurigram Government College vice-principal Professor Md Ataul Haque Khan Chowdhury said that professor Jamal died on April 12, 2023 and his Personal Data Sheet, preserved by the government, was duly updated with the information of his demise.Â
His widow was already receiving pension, he said.
‘His promotion is quite a strange incident,’ he added.
The education ministry maintains a database with separate files called Personal Data Sheet for every teacher under its payroll, which is maintained even after their death for the purpose of post-death benefits given to their families.Â
Professor Jamal was also father of Fairuz Sadaf Abontika, a 13th-batch law student at Jagannath University, who committed suicide on March 15.
In a Facebook post, before committing suicide, she accused her classmate Rayhan Siddique Amman of sexual harassment and assistant proctor Din Islam of supporting the alleged abuser.
Carmichael College history chairman Professor Md Habibur Rahman said that Professor Muttalib died on December 16 in 2023.
