At least 10 people were injured and 36 more detained as two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party clashed allegedly over a market lease at Zero Point of Daganbhuiyan upazila in Feni on Tuesday.

According to witnesses and police, two factions of the BNP in the upazila have been involved in confrontations over the past four months centring disputes within the party’s convening committee.

An altercation broke out on Tuesday afternoon at Zero Point between leaders of the BNP’s student wing, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, loyal to recently expelled Feni district JCD vice-chairman Kazi Jamshed Rahman Fatik, and BNP leaders loyal to Daganbhuiyan upazila BNP convener Akbar Hossain over the lease of a local market, they said.

This led to chases and counter-chases and cocktail explosions between the two sides, leaving at least 10 people from both the groups injured, they added.

During the clash, SSC and equivalent examinations were under way at nearby educational institutions, panicking examinees and their guardians.

‘A clash took place between the two factions over the lease of the market,’ assistant superintendent of police for Sonagazi-Daganbhuiyan Circle Taslim Uddin said, adding that during the clash a cocktail explosion near an SSC examination centre spread panic among people.

Later, in a joint drive at least 36 people were detained for questioning in connection with the incident, he said, adding that legal action is under way in this regard.

When asked, both Akbar and Fatik claimed that the other party attacked first.Â
