
About 61 per cent of all fatal victims in road crashes occurred in the Dhaka North City Corporation areas in 2023 were pedestrians, said a report published on Wednesday.
Following the pedestrians, the motorcyclists had the second largest share of fatalities, 24 per cent, as per the report.
It also said that buses and trucks were the deadliest vehicles on the Dhaka streets while most of the pedestrian deaths were caused by buses.
The report was jointly conducted by the DNCC and the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
It was revealed at a meeting titled Bangladesh Road Safety affairs held at a hotel in the capital jointly organised by the Road Transport and Highways Division and Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety.
DNCC, DMP, Chattogram City Corporation and Chattogram Metropolitan Police also supported the event, said a press release issued by the road transport and bridges ministry on Wednesday.聽聽
The data for the report were collected from the first information report and written complaint of each fatal road crash case filed with the 25 police stations within the DNCC jurisdiction.
In 2023, a total of 117 fatal crashes were reported in which 123 people were killed.
Three out of five road crash deaths involved pedestrians as 58 per cent of all the collisions were pedestrian hit.
Motorcyclists accounted for one out of every four fatalities while 65 per cent motorcyclists died in rear-end collisions.
The highest 87 per cent fatal crashes were hit and run.
A total of 83 per cent of all fatal victims were males.
All fatal female victims were pedestrians.
Of all the age groups, the 20-49 age groups had the highest number of fatalities in 2023.
The report also showed that every one in three pedestrians were killed by buses and every two of three motorcyclists died from crashes with trucks.
At the meeting, the chief guest and Road Transport and Highways Division senior secretary Md Ehsanul Hoque said that they were drafting a road safety law currently.
