The Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judge Court on Thursday sentenced eight people including Mohammad Rabiul Islam alias Arav Khan, a Dubai-based gold dealer, to life term imprisonment in connection with the killing of SB inspector Mamun Imran.
Judge Zakir Hossain Galib pronounced the judgment.
The other convicts are Suriya Akter Keya, 21, wife of Arav, Rahmat Ullah, 35, friend of SB inspector Mamun, Swapan Sarkar, 39, Didar Pathan, 21, Mizan Sheikh, 21, Atik Hasan, 21 and Sarwar Hossain, 23.
Among them, Arav Khan and his wife Suriya were tried in absentia.
The court also issued warrants for their arrest.
Police inspector Mamun was killed in Banani on July 7, 2018.
On July 10, the charred body of Mamun was recovered from a forest in Rayerdia area of Kaliganj upazila in Gazipur district.
Three days after the body recovery, a murder case was filed at Banani Police Station following a complaint lodged by his brother Jahangir.
After investigation, on March 31, 2019, the police filed a charge sheet in court against eight people including Rahmatullah and Rabiul Islam.
On November 25, 2021, the court ordered the trial to begin by forming a complaint in this case.
Rahmatullah along with Inspector Mamun went to House 5 on Road 2 of Banani to celebrate the birthday of a model.
The accused beat Mamun to death and took the body to Ulukhula of Gazipur where they left the body after pouring petrol on it and setting it on fire.
According to the case statement, Arav Khan used to extort money by luring wealthy people into traps. Their main target was to take ‘obscene’ photos and extort money by blackmailing their targeted persons.
To execute this plan, the group staged a fake birthday party and invited Rahmat, an accused in the case, to the house in Banani where Mamun was killed.
