
A woman in Tangail allegedly sold her four-month-old baby boy to buy a mobile phone, a pair of shoes, anklet, nose ring and other personal items.
The accused is Laboni Akter Liza, wife of one Robiul Islam, hailed from Gopalpur Balata village of the upazila.
The incident took place in Pundura Seoratola area o thef Madhupur municipality in Tangail.
When the woman’s husband reported the matter to the police on Thursday evening, the administration rushed to rescue the child.
After a night-long operation, the police rescued the child and returned him to his mother on Friday morning.
According to the child’s family and police sources, Laboni Akhter Liza, a resident of Pundura Shewratala area, was acquainted with Rabiul Islam on Facebook and their acquaintance developed further and, at one point, the two got married two years ago.
A few days after the marriage, a rift developed between them over different issues.
Rabiul then started living in a rented house next to the house for peace in the family.
‘Peace came to the family after the birth of our son Tamim,’ Rabiul said, adding that a few days ago, Laboni took her son Tamim to her sister’s house in Bhuapur. When I asked her to come home, he misbehaved with me.
A few days later, I called her again and requested her to return home.
Laboni, however, did not return even then.
After repeated communication, Laboni said that she had sold the child, Rabiul said.
‘I tactfully brought her from Bhuapur to Pakutia and brought her home,’ Rabiul said, adding that she confessed to selling his son.
Laboni Akhter Liza said, ‘My mental state was not right as I sold my son for Tk 40,000 to a man in Sirajganj on April 10 with the help of a person named Monir.’
‘I bought a mobile phone, anklets and nose rings with that money, Laboni said, adding that it was her mistake and she now wants her son back. In this regard, Madhupur police officer-in-charge Emranul Kabir said, ‘A police team conducted a raid and rescued the child.’ The child was handed over to the Rabiul-Laboni couple on Friday morning, the OC added.
