Politicians, academics and professionals on Saturday at a discussion in Dhaka demanded formation of a welfare state after the student-led mass uprising on August 5 after fall of the fascist Awami League government.

Sammilita Bangladesh Parishad organised the discussion titled ‘The kind of Bangladesh we want’   in the Shaheed Dr Milan conference room at Bangladesh Medical Association Bhaban on Topkhana Road presided over by Mohammad Amirul Islam.


Academic Lutfar Rahman said that they wanted to establish a discrimination-free country where rights of the common people would be established.

Artist Mustafa Zaman said that they wanted a developed Bangladesh where common people would reap benefits of development and the development must be environment- and nature-friendly.

Leader of the July uprising and spokesperson for Students Against Discrimination, Umama Fatema, said that the main target of the interim government headed by Professor Muhammad Yunus should be to put the fascists on trial and implement the spirit of the July student movement.

Arman Sharif, a participant in the July movement, said that he wanted the next general election held after bringing the killers to trial and reforming the constitution and ruling system.

KM Ansarul Karim, convener of July Joddha Sangsad said that they wanted the next general election held in a free, fair and credible manner after carrying out reforms within a justified time.

Mohammad Amirul Islam said that Sammilita Bangladesh Parishad wanted democratic rule in the country where rights of the common people would be established.

Professionals Mizanur Rahman, Jony Akaond, Afman Talukder, Mannan Talukder and others spoke at the discussion.
