The house of a fish farmer was allegedly vandalised on Thursday night, a day after he had filed a case against a former leader of Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal, youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

The farmer filed the case accusing the leader of looting fish from his pond and demanding extortion.

The victim is Abdul Jabbar Shah, a resident of Bujruk Kola village under Baghmara upazila in Rajshahi.

Abdul Jabbar Shah alleged that he took a khas pond on lease from the upazila administration for fish farming on a three-year contract last year, but former Juba Dal leader Shahiduzzaman Mukul demanded Tk 2 lakh extortion in the name of protecting the pond.

‘A group of BNP leaders and activists led by Shahiduzzaman formed a mob on April 4 and looted fish from a total of seven ponds belonging to me and others in the area,’ he said.

Following the incident when Jabbar went to the local police station to file a case, the police officers there advised him to file a case with a court.

Jabbar Shah said that he filed a case with a court against 16 people, including Shahiduzzaman, accusing them of demanding Tk 2 lakh extortion and looting fish from his pond on Wednesday, and the judge instructed Detective Branch to investigate the case.

‘After learning about the case, a group of 15 to 16 people led by Shahiduzzaman attacked my house at 11:30pm on Thursday,’ he alleged.

Jabbar said that he went to the local police station on Friday noon and the officers there asked him to lodge a written complaint.

‘I, however, have decided to file a case with the court on Sunday lest BNP activists should manage the officers at the police station,’ he said, adding that Shahiduzzaman threatened him with life.

Former JD leader Shahiduzzaman, however, denied the allegations of demanding extortion and attacking Jabbar’s house.

He claimed that Jabbar and a few others had been illegally occupying and farming fish in the seven khas ponds without any lease from the government.

‘These ponds were previously used to fund the development of the village’s mosque and temple,’ Shahiduzzaman said, adding that as villagers requested return of the ponds to their original community use, he asked Jabbar to catch fish and hand over his pond to villagers.

Shahiduzzaman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that it was true that some local people caught fish from the khas pond but he did not demand any extortion nor attacked Jabbar house as he was in Rajshahi on Thursday night.
