A shopkeeper was allegedly killed by the rival group at Chunarughat upazila in Habiganj on Saturday afternoon over a land dispute.

The deceased is Abdul Hai, 60, son of late Abdus Sattar of Jarulia village under Gazipur union of the Chunarughat upazila, police said.


Locals said that there had been a long-standing enmity between Abdul Hai, also owner of a cloth store at Jarulia Bazar, and his neighbours Abdal Miah, Kaptan Miah, Modabbir Miah and Miraj Miah over a piece of land.

On Saturday afternoon, When Abdul Hai went to cut off a bamboo shoot from the disputed land the rival group members locked in an altercation with him, they said.

At one state of exchanging heated words, the rivals stabbed him to death on the spot, locals said.

Chunarughat police officer-in-charge Nur Alam confirmed the death of Abdul Hai, saying that the s body was sent to Habiganj Sadar Adhunik Hospital for a post-mortem examination after recovering it from the spot.

‘Legal action will be taken after receiving a written complaint from the victim’s family,’ he added.
