The government on Sunday appointed Mohammad Sufiur Rahman, who served as the Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the UN Offices in Geneva and ambassador of Bangladesh to Switzerland, as the special assistant to chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.
Sufiur, who also served as Bangladesh high commissioner to Australia, will hold the rank and status of a State Minister.
Besides, he has been given the executive authority of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to assist the chief adviser under the Rules of Business, 1996. The Cabinet division issued a notification in this regard.
Sufiur will also receive the salary and other allowances and benefits entitled to a state minister.
After his retirement, he joined as senior research fellow at the South Asian Institute of Policy and Governance, North South University.
Sufiur was a career foreign service officer belonging to the 9th batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service鈥檚 foreign affairs cadre.
In his illustrious diplomatic career, he has served extensively in various capacities both at the headquarters as well as in Bangladesh Missions abroad such as New Delhi, Geneva and Islamabad. He also served as a director at SAARC Secretariat in Kathmandu.
Sufiur also served as Bangladesh high commissioner to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh ambassador to Myanmar. He has in his bag the experience of representing Bangladesh in numerous bilateral and multilateral meetings.
He did his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. He also completed MBA from Institute of Business Administration, University of Dhaka.
