At least several dozen, including 20 police personnel, were hurt in clashes between a group of Dhaka College students and a section of Dhaka City College students in the Science Laboratory area in the capital Dhaka on Tuesday allegedly over trivial issues.
A clash began at about 11:30am on the day when a group of Dhaka College students attacked a group of Dhaka City College students and threw brickbats towards the Dhaka City College campus over allegations of beating one of their fellows on Monday afternoon, according to protesters and witnesses.
Later, the students of Dhaka College and Dhaka City College engaged in clashes for several times amid the tension in the area for more than four hours.
People suffered immensely due to traffic congestion amid the clashes on roads and many vendors closed their shops on footpaths in the area.
At one point of the clashes, police lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the students.
At least 13 people, including students of both the colleges and a journalist, received treatment at the emergency unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital between 2:00pm and 4:00pm on Tuesday, said DMCH police outpost in-charge Md Faruk.
‘The victims had injury marks in different parts of their bodies. All of them received treatment and left the hospital,’ Faruk added.
While talking to reporters at the Science Laboratory crossing, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ramna division deputy commissioner Masud Alam said that some youths, who were not in Dhaka City College uniform, also joined the clash.
‘We are looking into the matter to find whether any third party was involved in the incident,’ he said.
Masud claimed that 15 to 20 police personnel sustained injuries while they were trying to bring the situation under control. ‘We did not detain anyone. We tried to disperse them to prevent any further clash,’ Masud added.
In these circumstances, Dhaka City College authorities on Tuesday announced the closure of the institution for two days and the authorities of both the colleges are scheduled to hold a meeting today in this regard, said DMP New Market zone assistant commissioner Tarik Latif.
He said that the situation became normal after 4:30pm.
Talking to reporters in front of Dhaka City College, the college’s acting principal, Mobarak Hossain, alleged that about 50-100 police personnel were seen standing nearby when Dhaka College students attacked City College.
‘I think if police had taken timely steps, there would not be such a large-scale vandalism,’ he added.
New Market police station officer-in-charge Md Mohsin Uddin told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that students of both the colleges had Facebook pages and through these pages they often made threats against each other over trivial issues.
Students of Dhaka College and Dhaka City College have locked into clashes a number of times in recent months with the previous one occurring about a week ago.
