
The workers of Kohinoor Chemical Company Limited blocked Mohakhali-Satrasta road at the capital’s Tejgaon on Tuesday over derogatory comments on Prophet Muhammad allegedly made by a senior official of the company.
The blockade of the road began at about 2:45pm and continued into the evening till 8:15pm.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Traffic Division diverted vehicles to avoid traffic congestion amid blockade in one of the major roads in the city.
Apart from the police, army personnel were also deployed at the spot. Â
DMP Gulshan Division additional deputy commissioner for traffic Ziaur Rahman said that workers began protests at about 2:45pm, bringing allegations against one of their senior officials that that official made derogatory remarks on Prophet Muhammad.
‘Police and army were deployed to maintain the law and order,’ he added.
Tejgaon industrial police officer-in-charge Gazi Shamimur Rahman said that although the company authority assured workers to terminate the officer, protesters demanded that the officer must be handed over to them. Â
‘Protesters demanded to hang the person and that the authorities must hand the official to them. We certainly cannot do that,’ the OC said, adding that the road was cleared by 8:15pm as protesters left the area.
Kohinoor Chemical Company Limited authorities declined to comment when contacted.
