A former leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, banned student organisation of Awami League, was hacked to death at Alokbali union in Narsingdi sadar upazila on Tuesday afternoon.
The deceased has been identified as Md Amir Hossain Sarkar, 30, former general secretary of Alokbali union unit of BCL and a member of the Ward 3 of Alokbali union council.
Narsingdi model police officer-in-charge Mohammad Emdadul Haque said that the attack was carried out at about 1:00pm Tuesday.
No case was filed as of 6:30pm Tuesday, he said, adding that killers and their motive remained unknown.
The victim’s family and local people, however, suspect that a local leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party was behind the killing. They told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Ahmed Qayum, Alokbali union unit BNP general secretary, might have hired killers to have Amir murdered over previous enmity.
Ahmed Qayum could not be reached over phone for comments.
The deceased’s brother Rabbi Mia said that Amir fled the area since the fall of Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League regime on August 5 last year.
‘He returned home to meet our brother who returned from abroad. Today, some people hacked Amir with sharp weapons and fled, leaving him seriously injured,’ Rabbi Mia said.
Later, when relatives and local people took him to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, the on-duty doctors declared him dead, he said.
Narsingdi Sadar Hospital resident medical officer Ashraful Islam said that Amir was brought dead to the hospital.
