The Aamjanatar Dal said on Thursday that they had proposed the National Consensus Commission to organise an all-party dialogue to understand the National Constitutional Council issue proposed by the Constitution Reform Council to reach a consensus on it as the issue was new in the country.

The newly floated party, which is still not registered with the Election Commission as a political party, said this after holding a meeting with the NCC at the LD Auditorium of Jatiya Sangsad in Dhaka.

The meeting was a part of the NCC’s dialogue with political parties aiming at reaching a consensus on the NCC-provided key reform proposals. Mia Mashiuzzaman, the convener of the Amjanatar Dal which was floated on January 25 this year, led a 12-member delegation in the meeting chaired by the NCC vice-chair Professor Ali Riaz.

In his opening remarks, Professor Riaz said that the lack of democratic institutions and structural weaknesses over the past 53 years paved the way for fascist rule in Bangladesh. He said that the NCC did not take the list of registered political parties into consideration.

‘After the July-August mass uprising in 2024, we only maintain communication with the parties that are campaigning for democracy and are not the allies of the ousted fascist Awami League,’ he said.

After the meeting, the party member secretary Tareq Rahman, briefed journalists.

He said that his party, though supported the proposed bicameral parliament, disagreed with the party-nominated members’ proportional representation in the upper house.

‘Each of the members must be elected through direct votes,’ he said.

The party also proposed that a person may serve as a prime minister for a maximum of three terms, with a mandatory break after two consecutive terms.

The meeting was moderated by the chief advisor’s special assistant, Monir Haider, and was also attended by NCC members Safar Raj Hossain, Badiul Alam Majumdar, and Iftekharuzzaman.

As of Thursday, the NCC has held dialogues with 16 political parties.
