
At least 612 people were killed and 1,246 more injured in 593 road crashes in the country in March, said a Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh report published on Thursday.
Most of the deaths occurred in accidents involving motorcycles, the report also said, mentioning that 41.01 per cent or 251 people died and 16.69 per cent or 208 more were injured in 38.27 per cent or 227 motorcycle related accidents.
In Dhaka division, the highest number of road accidents, 148, caused 150 deaths and injuries to 364 people while the lowest number of accidents, 31, occurred in the Barishal division, killing 31 people and injring 86 more.
Trains were involved in the next highest number of deaths—34 people—with six more injured in 40 railway accidents.
Eighteen people were killed and one more was injured in eight waterways accidents.
The report was prepared based on reports published in different national dailies, seven online news portals, different electronic media and own sources, said a press release issued by the association.
Of the fatal victims, 143 were transport workers including drivers, 97 were pedestrians, 51 were students, 14 teachers and and seven political leaders and activists.
Fifty-two fatal victims were children in March.
Of the accidents, the highest 51.26 per cent were caused when vehicles crushed onto other things followed by 22.59 per cent by head-on collisions, 17.2 per cent by the vehciles falling into roadside ditches as the drivers lost control of the vehicles, 7.92 per cent by other reasons, 084 per cent by collision between trains and other vehciles and 0.16 per cent by tangling scarves on vehicle wheels.
According to the report, the highest, 37.26 per cent road accidents took place on feeder roads followed by 34.23 per cent on national highways and 23.44 per cent on regional highways.
Out of total accidents, 3.54 per cent occurred in Dhaka metropolitan city and 0.67 per cent in Chattogram metropolitan city.
The association blamed misuse of traffc laws, corruption and irregularities of the controlling authorities, increase in the numbers of motorcycles, battery-run rickshaws and three-wheeler vehicles and disobedience to laws for the accidents.
The association recommended complete data bank on road crashes, the smart public transport system, stop importing smaller vehicles like motorcycles and easybikes and enforcing laws strictly to improve the situations.
A Road Safety Foundation report, published recently, shows that at least 604 people were killed and 1,231 more injured in 587 road crashes in the country in March.
