
At least 50 people were injured in a clash between supporters of an Awami League leader and a Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader at Ajmiriganj upazila in Habiganj on Friday over establishing dominance in the area.
Local people said that there was a longstanding enmity between BNP leader Aktar Miah and AL leader Shahjahan Miah of Noagarh village
at Jalsukha union at Ajmiriganj upazila over running a fishery of the Jalsukha Village Panchayet and establishing supremacy of their respective groups in the area.
On April 23, the supporters of Shahjahan beat up a supporter of Aktar after he went to resolve a family feud of a man loyal to Shahjahan, they said.
As a sequel to that incident, supporters of both the leaders, being armed with bamboo sticks, spears and stones, locked in a clash at about 8:00am on Friday, the local people said.
More than 50 people of the feuding groups were injured in attacks and counter attacks during the clash that continued till 10:00am, they said.
The local people said that five of the seriously injured were sent to Sylhet Medical College Hospital for better treatment while the rest of the injured were admitted to Ajmiriganj Upazila Health Complex and Habiganj Sadar Adhunik Hospital.
Ajmiriganj police station officer-in-charge ABM Maidul Hasan told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they reached the spot after being informed by local people and brought the situation under control at about 10:00am.
‘A team of police was also deployed in the area to avert further clash,’ he said, adding that no written complaint was filed with the police station till Friday afternoon.Â
