The services of the metro rail on the entire Uttara-Motijheel route in the capital Dhaka were disrupted for around two hours on Saturday following an electrical fault.

Metro passengers faced sufferings during the disruption in the services.

Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited director Nasir Uddin Ahmed said that an electric fuse burnt out at the electrical substation at the Bijoy Sarani station at about 5:00pm on the day.

Following this, electricity went off and the movement of trains on the entire route came to a halt immediately, he said.

The services resumed at 6:52pm after maintenance, he added.

During the disruption in the services, the gates of different metro rail stations remained closed.

Passengers had to wait for hours to get on the metro trains.

Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited is the implementing agency of the 20.1- kilometre-long Mass Rapid Transit Line 6 project, popularly known as metro rail, the first ever elevated, fully air-conditioned and a electricity-run rail system in the country.

Earlier on March 24, metro rail services were suspended for half an hour on the Uttara-Motijheel route as a train faced glitches in its braking system, causing suffering to commuters.

On January 25, the operation of the metro rail service on the entire route was suspended twice and on the Uttara-Pallabi section for once due to technical glitches in the signalling system and excessive pressure of passengers.

Metro rail services faced frequent disruptions in 2024 too.

In the latest incident in 2024, the service was partially suspended on September 18 after a bearing pad fell off the superstructure.

Earlier in the year, technical glitches disrupted the services on July 7, May 25, March 19, February 17 and February 4.

The service was disrupted also on May 27 for Cyclone Remal, on March 31 for a thunderstorm and falling of plastic litter on the overhead catenary, and on February 14 for a stray kite falling on the power cable.

In 2023, the metro rail services remained suspended three times on August 7, 9 and 21 mainly due to technical glitches and operational reasons.

The metro rail service was opened to the public first on the Uttara-Agargaon section on December 28, 2022. It was then extended till Motijheel and the section was opened to the public on November 4, 2023.
