A youth was shot dead and his brother was injured in an attack allegedly by a group of assailants at Begumganj upazila in Noakhali on Monday night.

The deceased, Md Shakil, 28, was a carpenter.


Confirming the matter, Begumganj model police inspector for investigation Md Habibur Rahman said that three suspected attackers were detained in the incident as local people beat them up right after the incident and handed them over to the police.

The detained are Morshed Alam, 24, Jibon, 24, and Monir, 22, all residents of Dhitpur village under Alaiyapur union of Begumganj.

Inspector Habibur said that the incident took place at around 8:00pm on Monday at Gangabar Bazar in Ward 2 of Chayani union of the upazila.

‘We have heard that Shakil was an activist of the Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal,’ Habibur said, adding that it will be confirmed after an investigation.

According to police and witnesses, five armed individuals attempted to abduct a youth named Labib using a CNG-run auto-rickshaw when Shakil, his brother Shuvo, and others from a nearby tea shop rushed to intervene.

At that time, the assailants opened fire indiscriminately and attacked Shakil and others with sharp weapons.

Shakil was shot, while Shuvo sustained stab wounds.

Later, local people rushed the brothers to Noakhali General Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared Shakil dead.

Following the incident, enraged local people beat up three of the attackers involved in the attempted abduction and assault.

Police later rescued the accused from the mob and admitted them to the same hospital in critical condition.

Inspector Habibur said that legal action would be taken based on the family’s complaint.
