Actor Siddiqur Rahman Siddique was physically assaulted allegedly by a group of people identifying themselves as activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, in Dhaka’s Kakrail area on Tuesday afternoon before being handed over to the police.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner for Ramna zone Masud Alam told journalists that Siddiq was attacked before he was handed over to the police.
Siddiq’s condition was normal and he was given first aid in police custody, he said.
‘Siddiq has been handed over to Gulshan police station and he is accused in one murder and one attempted murder cases filed with the police station,’ Masud Alam said, adding that the cases were filed in connection with the July-August mass uprising.
The incident occurred at about 4:00pm and was captured on multiple videos circulating widely on social media.
It was seen in the footage that some people, identifying themselves as activists of the JCD, dragged and beat Siddiq and, even tore his shirt before handing him over to the police.
Police were also seen while the mob was beating up the actor.
Police, however, could not say whether any action was taken against the mob.
Some of the attackers accused Siddiq of being an ‘agent of Awami League’ and shouted political slogans during the handover.
One individual in the video was seen narrating the event, stating, ‘We are handing over Siddiq, an AL collaborator, to the police.’
Siddiq, originally from Madhupur in Tangail, had been active in the entertainment industry for over two decades.
He previously sought party nominations from the AL to contest elections from Dhaka-17 and Tangail-1 constituencies.
