
The returning officer鈥檚 office for each of Sadar in Cumilla and Raujan and Rangunia in Chattogram received a single nomination paper from the ruling Awami League aspirants for the post of chairman in each of the upazilas for the second phase of upazila parishad elections slated for May 21.
According to returning officials of the districts concerned, no one else submitted nomination papers on Sunday, the last day for submission of nomination papers.
Now, if the candidacy of the three aspirants in the three upazilas becomes valid during scrutiny on April 23, they will be elected unopposed.
Earlier on the day, Election Commission additional secretary confirmed that a total of 2,055 aspiring candidates submitted nomination papers for three positions鈥攃hairman, vice chairman general seat, and vice chairman's seat reserved for women鈥攊n the second phase of the upazila parishad elections to 160 upazilas slated for May 21.
Among them, 730 aspirants have submitted nomination papers for the post of chairman, 763 aspirants submitted for the post of vice chairman, and 562 for the post of reserved seat vice chairman for women.
The current chairman of Cumilla Adarsh Sadar upazila parishad, Aminul Islam, is going to be elected unopposed.
He is a member of the Cumilla Metropolitan unit of Awami League.
Apart from this, there are no rivals for the other two posts, Ahmed Niaz, joint general secretary of the upazila unit Awami League, as vice chairman, and Hosney Ara Bakul, women affairs secretary of the upazila Awami League and current vice chairman for reserve seat, as vice chairman for reserve seat.
Among the candidates, Aminul and Hosney Ara were elected uncontested in the upazila elections held on June 18, 2019.
All of them are locally known as close associates of AL Cumilla-6 lawmaker AKM Bahauddin.
On the other hand, the three candidates for the post of chairman, vice chairman, and vice chairman for reserve seat who submitted their nomination papers for contesting in the Raujan upazila parishad elections of Chattogram are going to be elected unopposed.
Those who are going to be elected unopposed are District Awami League vice president Ehsanul Haidar Chowdhury as chairman, upazila unit Awami League leader Nur Mohammad as vice chairman, and upazila Mahila Awami League general secretary Rubina Yasmin as vice chairman for reserved seat for women.
Out of these three, chairman and vice chairman candidates are currently serving in their respective positions.
In Rangunia, voting is required only for the post of vice chairman, as four people have submitted nomination papers for this post, while single nomination papers were submitted for the posts of chairman and vice chairman for reserved seat for women.
According to EC officials, Abul Kashem Chishti is going to be elected unopposed as no other candidate submitted nomination papers for the post of chairman.
He is currently the vice president of Chattogram North District Awami League.
Upazila Mahila Awami League president Hosne Ara Begum is also going to be elected unopposed as the vice chairman.
