Three High Court judges were elevated to the Appellate Division on Wednesday, superseding their senior colleagues.

The newly appointed Appellate Division judges are Justice Muhammad Abdul Hafiz, Justice Md Shahinur Islam and Justice Kashefa Hussain, according to a notification issued by the law ministry on Wednesday.


The chief justice, Obaidul Hassan, is due today to administer oaths to the newly appointed three judges at a ceremony at the Supreme Court Judges’ Lounge at about 10:30am, according to Appellate Division registrar Mohammad Saifur Rahman.

With the new appointments, the number of the Appellate Division judges rose to eight. 

Of the judges, Justice Muhammad Abdul Hafiz superseded senior most judge Salma Masud Chowdhury, while Justice Md Shaninur Islam and Justice Kashefa Hussain superseded their 40 colleagues, according to the seniority list of the High Court Division judges.

Justice Abdul Hafiz will serve as an Appellate Division judge for 37 days as he will retire on May 31, this year.

Justice Shahinur Islam will retire on April 6, 2025, while Justice Kashefa Hussain will retire on June 30, 2025.

Justice Abdul Hafiz was appointed as a High Court judge in 2003, while Justice Md Shahinur Islam and Justice Kashefa Hussain were appointed in 2013.

Before his appointment as an Appellate Division judge, Shahinur served at the International Crimes Tribunal for 10 years as a High Court judge. He was the tribunal registrar in the capacity of a senior district judge before his appointment as a High Court justice.

Justice Shahinur Islam was the chairman of the International crime tribunal-1, before he was transferred to the High Court on February 27 this year, following an order from the law ministry.
