The High Court on Tuesday stayed the process of recruiting assistant teachers to government primary schools in 21 districts of Dhaka and Chattogram divisions over an allegation that a total of 46,199 candidates were selected in the recruitment test with leaked question papers.
The bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and SM Masud Hossain Dolon granted the stay for six months after hearing a writ petition filed by Jewel Ratan Das and 14 others disqualified candidates challenging the legality of recruiting the candidates as teachers, who were selected in a test with leaked question papers.
The petitioners’ lawyer, Syed Sayedul Haque Suman told the court that a total of 3.5 lakh candidates participated in the written test held on March 29 following a circular for the recruitment on June 14, 2023.
Some 46,199 candidates were selected in the test according to the result published on April 21.
The court also asked the government to investigate the allegation of question paper leaks in the recruitment test and submit a report in three months.
The court also asked the government authorities to explain why their failure to ensure the recruitment exam free from leaked question papers would not be declared illegal.Â
The court also asked the authorities to explain why they would not be directed to initiate the recruitment process after holding fresh tests. Â
Seven students were detained in Madaripur and one student in Rajbari along with their answer sheets and digital devices during the examination.
Two separate cases were filed in two districts over the incident, according to Detective Branch of the police.
The arrested students allegedly told the DB that candidates received the questions and solutions a few minutes before the test.
Mobile phones confiscated from some examinees during the March 29 exam contained both the genuine question papers and their solutions.
