Family members of Masud Rana, who was killed in a clash between supporters of two defeated upazila vice-chairman candidates in Kamarkhanda upazila elections, alleged that the police did not take a case over the murder.
Nazma Khatun, wife of the deceased, alleged that the Kamarkhanda police station did not register any case till filing the report at 9:00pm on Friday.
‘Most of the accused are influential in the area which is why the police are reluctant to take the case,’ Nazma said.
She alleged that the officer-in-charge of the police station asked her to submit a statement after removing the name of accused no 4, Hasan Pramanik. Â
Masud died in the early hours of Thursday, hours after he was admitted to Sirajganj General Hospital after he was beaten by his rivals, who supported the defeated candidate, Hafizur Rahman.
Masud was also a teacher of mathematics at BUK High School in Kamarkhanda and a photojournalist of newspaper Somoyer Alo.
Nazma submitted a written complaint with the police station on Thursday afternoon, against 13 people for murdering her husband.
Kamarkhanda police station officer-in-charge Rezaul Islam and circle officer Adnan Mustafiz could not be reached for comment despite several attempts over the phone.
Kamarkhanda police station inspector for investigation Sajjadur Rahman, however, said that no case was filed so far for unknown reason.
‘The circle officer is investigating the matter,’ he said.
Both the candidates are holding posts of the ruling Awami League and its associate bodies.
Selim Reza is the Awami League Kamaarkhanda upazila unit assistant general secretary, while Hafizur Rahman is a member of the Bangladesh Krishak League Kamarkhanda upazila unit.
According to the victim family and witnesses, Masud was allegedly attacked by Hafizur Rahman’s supporter Lutfor Rahman for supporting Selim Raza in the upazila elections held on June 5.
