The advisory council of the interim government in a meeting on Tuesday decided to cancel the public holiday on August 15, observed as the national mourning day to mark the assassination of the country鈥檚 founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with most of his family members.
The decision was taken following a consensus in recent discussion between Chief Adviser Professor Mohammad Yunus and leaders of several political parties, according to officials.
The meeting also decided to scrape the age limit for appointment of Bangladesh Bank governor.
Later in the evening, the Financial Institutions Division in an official order appointed economist Ahsan H Mansur as the BB governor for four years.聽聽聽聽聽聽聽
The meeting of the advisory council presided over by the chief advisor accepted condolences to martyrs of the recent student-led mass protest that ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5.
Besides, a decision was taken for the constitution of a committee comprising finance division, social welfare ministry, Secondary and Higher Education Division, Technical and Madrasah Education Division, primary and mass education ministry, and representatives from the Anti-discrimination Students Movement.
The committee will prepare a policy to facilitate assistance to injured persons in the recent mass uprising and family members of the martyrs.
It will also prepare a full list of injured persons and martyrs with detail descriptions.
According to finance ministry officials, the age-limit is causing problems to find a suitable person for the post of the Bangladesh Bank governor that has fallen vacant following resignation of Abdur Rauf Talukder.
They argued that there had been no age limit for the central bank governor in neighbouring India and Sri Lanka.
The officials added that the decision by the interim government had been taken to appoint economist Ahsan H Mansur as the new BB governor.
Functioning as the executive director of private think-tank Policy Research Institute, Ahsan H Mansur is now 72 years old.
He began his career as a lecturer of economics at Dhaka University in 1976 and also served in the International Monetary Fund.
