
Three members of a family were killed in a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall in Pekua upazila of Cox’s Bazar early Sunday.
The incident took place in the Jaralbunia area under Shilkhali union of the upazila at about 2:00am.
The deceased are Mumtaz Begum, 32, wife of Sarwar Alam, her daughters Toha, 8, and Maina, 13, of Jarulbania in Segunbagicha area under ​​Shilkhali union of the upazila.Â
Officer-in-charge of Pekua police station Mohammad Elias confirmed the news to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.
Pekua upazila nirbahi officer Saiful Islam Joy said, ‘Due to heavy rain, the ground became soft and the hill collapsed at around 2:00am which damaged the tin shed of local Sarwar Alam, leaving his wife and two daughters dead.’
On information, police rushed to the spot and found that three members of a family were killed in the landslide, said the OC Mohammad Elias.
In the 24 hours until 6:00pm on Sunday, Cox’s Bazar recorded Bangladesh’s highest maximum rainfall of 194mm, according to Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
The BMD predicted rainfall at most places across Bangladesh through Tuesday and the rain might continue. The ongoing wet spell is triggered by a low formed over the Bay of Bengal.
On June 19, a total 10 people eight from the Rohingya community and two from the local community were killed in a landslide in the Rohingya camp, and on June 20, a couple were killed in Cox’s Bazar sadar upazila.
On July 3, another two people were killed in Rohingya Camp No. 11 in Balukhali area of Ukhia upazila in the district. On July 11, Mim Akter, 13, a student was killed in a landslide caused by torrential rainfall in Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila.
