Postgraduate trainee doctors and private postgraduate trainee physicians on Sunday blocked the Shahbagh crossing to press home their one-point demand for increasing their pay to Tk 50,000 from Tk 25,000 or giving them the ninth grade on government’s eighth pay scale.

The protesters said that they would not leave the streets until their demands were realised through a gazette notification.

The protesters blocked the crossing for more than eight hours since 11:45pm that caused severe traffic congestion in areas, including Dhaka University, Segun Bagicha, Elephant Road, Kataban, New Market, Banglamotor, Farmgate, Eskaton and Moghbazar.

The protesters, most of them working at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, did not even allow pedestrians to use the crossing during the protest.

Rajvy Rafaet, a businessman, said that he required three hours from Bangshal to Agargaon.

‘It usually requires one hour or one and a half hours,’ he added.

The protest also caused sufferings to patients at the BSMMU as the hospital authorities went through shortage of doctors.

Shahbagh police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Khalid Mansoor told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· in the evening that the protesters were still blocking the road.

‘The protesters earlier did not even allow pedestrians to walk in the area. Now, protesters are allowing ambulances carrying dying patients and pedestrians,’ the OC added.

The protests continued till filing the report at about 9:00pm.

BSSMU director Brigadier General Md Rezaur Rahman said that they had suffered from shortage of doctors due to the protest.

‘The hospital activities are not being largely affected. But, the protest has affected our daily activities,’ the director said.

Rezaur said that he knew nothing about the demands and protests as it was handled by the BSSMU vice-chancellor.

‘The VC sir is now staying abroad,’ he added.
