The International Crimes Tribunal on Wednesday asked the Investigation Agency to complete its probe into crimes against humanity committed during the July-August mass uprising in Rangpur in Two months.

The deceased in Rangpur during the mass uprising include Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur student Abu Sayeed.


The three-member tribunal chaired by Justice Golam Mortoza Mozumder passed the order after prosecutor Mizanul Islam sought more time to complete the probe.

The tribunal also ordered the detention of four individuals in the Abu Sayeed murder case. They are former BRUR proctor Shafiul Islam, Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Imran Chowdhury Akash, police sub-inspector Amir Hossain and constable Sujan Chandra Roy.

They were produced before the tribunal in response to a previous summon.

Prosecutor Mizanul told the court that the investigators found prima facie evidence against 26 individuals, including student leaders and members of the police force.

‘We are currently verifying the evidence,’ he said.

The Abu Sayeed murder case relates to the fatal police shooting of the BRUR student on July 16, 2024, amid a nationwide student protests against discrimination in government job recruitment quota.

Sayeed’s death became a flashpoint, fueling the broader movement that eventually called for the resignation of the Sheikh Hasina-led government. Hasina was ousted from power on August 5, 2024.

In a separate order, the tribunal allowed the Investigation Agency to interrogate three former senior police officials in connection with the alleged extrajudicial killing of nine youths during a controversial anti-extremist raid at Jahajbari, a house in the capital’s Mirpur area, on July 26, 2016.

The former top officials are former inspector general of Police AKM Shahidul Haque, former Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah and former DMP assistant commissioner Jasim Uddin Mollah.

They are scheduled to be interrogated in April 21–23.
