An eight-month-old child was killed when his parents jumped from a moving train after a fire broke out inside the train at Lohagara upazila in Chattogram on Tuesday evening.

Officials of Bangladesh Railway said that the fire was originated from a short circuit and it was put out immediately.

A committee was formed to probe the incident, they added.

The deceased is Hamdan, son of Abdur Razzaq and Liza Akhtar, residents of Cox’s Bazar Sadar. His parents sustained injuries in the incident.

Chattogram divisional railway manager Md Kamruzzaman said that the incident took place between 7:00pm and 7:30pm on Tuesday when the Probal Express was going to Cox’s Bazar from Chattogram.

At that time, a short circuit took place between two compartments of the moving train, he said.

He also said that the fire which created smoke and caused panic among the passengers was immediately put out.

‘The victim and his parents were not in the compartment where the incident took place, but they jumped from the train in panic,’ Kamruzzaman added.

Lohagara police sub-inspector Rabiul Alam said that the injured couple and the child were taken to Lohagara Upazila Health Complex where the child was declared dead.

After post-mortem examinations the body was handed over to the family, he added.

Md Kamruzzaman said that the damage by the incident was minor.

‘We formed a three-member probe committee which is scheduled to submit its report in three working days,’ he added.
