A spell of rain accompanied by lightning strikes and gusty wind brought people respite from days of sweltering heat in Dhaka on Wednesday.

The Met Office recorded 31 millimetres of rainfall, considered moderately heavy, over three hours beginning at 3:00pm, said meteorologist Md Shaheenul Islam. ‘The rainfall was caused by the Bengal nor’wester.’

The second spell of heatwave this month had lasted three days before it ended on Tuesday, with intermittent thunderstorms sweeping over parts of Bangladesh.

The rainfall continued intermittently until 7:50pm. People on the road faced difficulties because of the shortage of public transports and the high fares that rickshaw-pullers and auto-rickshaws charged.

Several roads and alleys, including Kalshi, in Dhaka went under ankle- to knee-high rainwater that collected.

The Meteorological Department forecasts light to moderate rainfall or thunder showers, accompanied by lightning strikes and temporary gusty winds at a few places in the Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions. Rainfall may occur at one or two places in the Rangpur, Khulna, and Barishal divisions.

Moderately heavy to heavy rainfall is expected in various parts of the country, between 6:00pm on Wednesday and 6:00pm on Thursday.
