An activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League, banned student organisation of the Awami League, was stabbed to death allegedly by his BCL rival group in Sylhet on Tuesday night.

The deceased is Toshar Ahmed Chowdhury, 21, a student of Madan Mohan College in the city and son of Sajed Ahmed Chowdhury, a lawyer in the city’s Roynagar area, police said.

Local residents said that Tushar locked in an altercation with his organisation fellows while he was chatting with them sitting along Daldali Tea Garden area at Shahi Eidgah in the city on Tuesday night.

At one point of exchanging heated words, Tushar’s opponents stabbed him repeatedly, leaving him critically injured at around 10:00pm, they said.

Sylhet Biman Bandar police officer-in-charge Syed Anisur Rahman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Tushar was taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital after recovering him in critical condition from the spot.

‘The attending doctors of the hospital declared him dead on arrival,’ he said, adding that one youth named Javed Ahmed, 22, was arrested at a residence in the Ambarkhana area in the city on Wednesday night for his suspected involvement in the killing incident.

He said that Toshar’s father filed a murder case with the Biman Bandar police station on Wednesday morning against three named and seven unidentified people.

‘The arrested was produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Sylhet, at noon and the court ordered to send him to jail in the case,’ the police officer said, adding that efforts were on to bring the other people involved in the murder to book.

He said that the victim’s body was also handed over to his family in the afternoon after completion of a postmortem examination at the SOMCH.
