
The state minister for education, Begum Shamsun Nahar, said on Thursday that under the new national curriculum there should not be more than 55 students in each class.
At an inaugural ceremony, she also said that initiative in this regard was taken.
In reality, numbers of students at different schools, especially in urban and semi urban areas, are much higher per class.
The state minister attended the ceremony to inaugurate a two-day orientation workshop on a Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education programme held at BRAC CDM at Savar, said a press release issued by the ministry.
Shamsun Nahar also said that the implementation of the new curriculum was started through different challenges.
Referring to crisis of teachers in educational institutions, she also said that the ratio of teachers and students might not be at an expected level in many institutions.
All problems will be solved soon, she said.
The state minister further said that now time had come to work together to implement the curriculum.
All people concerned should be engaged with the discussion of the evaluation system and the tertiary level education under the new curriculum as students and their guardians are raising questions about these, she continued.
She also urged the people engaged with the preparation and implementation of the new curriculum to answer these questions as soon as possible.Â
With the transformation of the curriculum, responsibilities and duties of the education administration should be transformed also, she added.Â
The ceremony was attended, among others, by DSHE director general professor Md Shahedul Khabir Chowdhury, new curriculum dissemination, monitoring and mentoring scheme director professor Mahfuz Ali, Secondary and Higher Education Department additional secretary Mohammad Khaled Rahim and National Curriculum and Textbook Board chairman professor Md Farhadul Islam.
A DSHE official said that numbers of students in schools in cities and district towns were more than 50 per class while the number of students in schools in periphery areas was lower.Â
In 2023, the government introduced the new national school curriculum to Classes I, VI and VII across the country.
This year the students of Classes of II, III, VIII and IX also came under the new curriculum.
The students of Classes of IV, V and X remained under the curriculum of 2012, the classes of which will come under the latest curriculum in 2025 and by 2027 it will be implemented for the students of Class XII.
