Students from several institutions, including Dhaka Medical College, on Monday demanded the cancellation of medical admission test results published on Sunday.

They also demanded the government reform the quota in all tiers of admission and public jobs at a reasonable level through dialogue with stakeholders.

The health ministry published the MBBS admission test results keeping the existing  7 per cent quota—5 per cent for the children of freedom fighters, 1 per cent for national minorities, and 1 per cent for people with disabilities and third genders.

The students held protest rallies following the publication of the results, saying that they see the results as a betrayal of the people who sacrificed their life for a discrimination-free society.

Additional director general for medical education professor Rubina Yasmin said that the results were published according to the existing government rules.

‘We are following government rules. If the government changes its rules, we will also follow that,’ she said.

Out of 269 seats for freedom fights’ children only 193 students were primarily qualified, she said.

‘In case of any irregularity against any candidate, the seat would be filled from the merit list,’ she added.

In July 2024, the government published gazette notification reserving seven per cent quota—5 per cent for the children of freedom fighters, 1 per cent for national minorities, and 1 per cent for people with disabilities and third genders.

Student Movement Against Discrimination co-coordinator Abdul Baker Mazumder said that they wanted quota only for the disadvantaged people to ensure their proper representation.

A group of Dhaka Medical College students on Sunday night held a protest rally at the Central Shaheed Minar, demanding the abolition of quota system for medical admissions, cancellation of the published results, and re-announcement of the results.

On Sunday at about 11.30pm, students from Dhaka University and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology also joined the rally in solidarity.

They announced that if the results were not cancelled by 11:00am on Monday, students from all institutions would hold a protest programme at the Central Shaheed Minar.
