The detective branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Jatiya Party–JP chairman and former minister Anwar Hossain Manju in the capital’s Dhanmondi area Monday afternoon.

He was, however, freed on bail in the evening, while a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court placed former Awami League lawmaker Haji Mohammad Salim on a five-day remand in a murder case filed with the Lalbagh police station.


Another Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court sent former commerce minister Tipu Munshi to jail in a case field for the killing of Sumon Sikder in the capital’s Badda area.

Another Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court put Awami League publicity secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap on fresh remand for three days in a case filed for the killing of apparel worker Rubel in the capital’s Adabor area.

The detective branch police interrogated Manju over the killings during the student-led mass uprising, said its joint commissioner for North Mohammad Rabiul Hossain Bhuiyan.

‘We have taken him to the office for interrogation. We have arrested him as he has been named in five cases on various charges, including murder. He was released on bail considering his age. He turned 80 and his health condition is not well at all,’ Rabiul told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.

He was given bail by the officer-in-charge concerned using the rarely used provision of 497 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. 

Jatiya Party-JP is a partner of AL-led 14-party alliance.

Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Akteruzzaman placed former three time AL lawmaker Haji Salim on five-day remand in a case filed for the murder of Ideal College student Khalid Hasan Saifullah during the Student Movement Against Discrimination on July 18 at Azimpur Government Colony’s near building number 7.

Police produced Haji Salim before the court seeking 10-day remand for interrogation.

Earlier in the early hours of Monday, DB police arrested Haji Salim in the capital’s Bangshal area and took him at the DB custody at about 2:00am.

Meanwhile, a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court on the day sent former commerce minister Tipu Munshi to jail after completing remand in a case filed over killing Sumon Sikder.

Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Md Mehedi Hasan passed the order, bench officer of court Gautam Chandra confirmed.

On August 28, Rapid Action Battalion arrested Tipu Munshi in the capital’s Gulshan area.

Besides, another Dhaka metropolitan court placed AL central executive committee publication and publicity secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap was on three-day remand in a case filed over the death of a garment worker Rubel in the capital’s Adabor area.

Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Md Ali Haider passed the order as Adabar police station Inspector Mintu Chandra Banik produced Abdus Sobhan Golap before the court seeking seven-day remand.

Earlier, Golap was detained from Nakhalpara in the capital on August 25.
