Mehidy Hasan Miraz took his 11th five-wicket haul in Test cricket to lead Bangladesh’s fightback on the second day of the ongoing first Test against Zimbabwe at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Monday.Ìý
Bangladesh ended the day on 57-1 in their second innings after scoring 191 in the first, to bring the deficit of 82 runs to 25 as Zimbabwe were all out for 273 in 80.2 overs in their first innings in the final session of the day.Ìý
Opener Mahmudul Hasan (28*) and Mominul Haque (15*) remained unbeaten after Shadman Islam (four) failed once again.Ìý
Mahmudul and Mominul—who scored a fifty in the first innings—hit nine boundaries between them to finish the day on a high note for the hosts, which started with Zimbabwe being well ahead.Ìý
With Zimbabwe beginning the day on 67-0, Nahid Rana gave Bangladesh the early breakthrough in the second morning when his short ball got the better of Ben Curran on the third over of the day.Ìý
The express pacer struck again to dismiss Brian Bennett, who had already reached his half-century. Hasan Mahmud then went through the defence of Nick Welch, as Zimbabwe found themselves in a spot of bother at 88-3.Ìý
But two senior campaigners—captain Craig Ervine and Sean Williams—recovered well as they added 41 runs for the fourth wicket.Ìý
Nahid struck again to break that promising stand when Ervine failed to put out his bat timely off a sharp length delivery. Bangladesh, however, got that wicket via DRS.Ìý
Williams, though, continued to rebuild, this time with the company of Wessly Madhevere, who finally fell after chopping on a delivery of Khaled Ahmed. Madhevere added 48 runs with Williams.Ìý
Williams finally threw his wicket away to become the first scalp of Mehidy after reaching fifty in 87 balls as he holed out to long off.Ìý
That opened the floodgates for Bangladesh as Mehidy saw the backs of wicketkeeper Nyasha Mayavo (35) and Wellington Masakadza in back-to-back overs.Ìý
Richard Ngarava, however, added some invaluable runs with number 10 Blessing Muzarabani and the last batter, Victor Nyauchi.Ìý
But Muzarabani and Nyauchi both fell to Mehidy after adding 36 and 14 runs with Ngarava, who remained unbeaten on 28.Ìý
Nyauchi became the fifth wicket of Mehidy, who finished with 5-52. Nahid, who will be granted the NOC after this Test to play in the Pakistan Super League, took 3-74, while Khaled and Hasan took one wicket each.Ìý
