
The Gono Odhikar Parishad on Tuesday announced a countrywide programme demanding a ban on and trial of ousted prime minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina and other AL leaders allegedly involved in killing during the student-led mass uprising.
The weeklong programme is also set to press for reconstitution of the interim government鈥檚 advisory council and an announcement of an election road map.
GOP general secretary Rashed Khan made the announcement at a press conference held at its office at Paltan in the capital Dhaka.
In a written statement, Rashed said that the countrywide programmes would include protest rallies, leaflet distributions and mass campaigns from February 12 to February 19 to press home the party鈥檚 five-point demand.
The demands included bringing to justice all those involved in the July massacre, including Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India during the uprising and taking steps to ban them in politics, and reconstituting the advisory council and announcing an election road map after consultation with stakeholders of the uprising to ensure effective reforms based on a national consensus for rebuilding a new Bangladesh.
The other demands included preparing a list of those injured and martyred during the uprising and in the past 16-year of democratic struggle and ensuring compensation, and proper medical treatment and rehabilitation for them ensuring the arrest, and trial of those involved in looting and money laundering in the name of development during the fascist regime.
The GOP will also demand trial for those responsible for enforced disappearances and killings under the fascist Hasina regime over the past 16 years, as well as those involved in the 2014, 2018 and 2024 election fraud.
GOP vice-president Faruk Hasan, its higher council members Abu Hanif, Habibur Rahman Reezu, vice-president Mazedul Islam, publicity secretary Sohidul Islam, youth and sports secretary Ilyas Mia and others were present at the press conference.
The party鈥檚 Dhaka city unit is scheduled to organise a protest rally in front of the National Press Club in the capital on February 14.
Besides, the leaflet distribution and mass campaign will be held from February 12 to February 18 across the country, while protest rallies will be held countrywide in districts on February 19.
