Historic Mujibnagar Day was observed on Thursday in a befitting manner highlighting the oath-taking ceremony of the country’s first government on April 17, 1971.

The programmes on the day included hoisting the national flag, discussion, giving guards of honour and passing-out parades.


Bangladesh Sangbad Sangtha reported that Mujibnagar Day was observed in Meherpur on Thursday with a pledge to let the new generation know the history of the War of Independence.

Liberation war affairs adviser Faruk-e-Azam, said that the Mujibnagar government was an internationally recognised and constitutional government as it organised the country’s War of Independence and helped establish relations with international communities. 

‘The Mujibnagar government is an internationally recognised one and, therefore, there is no plan to rename the Mujibnagar Government,’ the adviser said, adding, ‘The History cannot be erased...History must be kept at its own place.’

The adviser made these remarks while talking to newsmen after placing wreaths at the Mujibnagar Memorial in Meherpur district marking the historic Mujibnagar Day.

Earlier in the morning at about 5:43am, the adviser hoisted the national flag when the national anthem was played and a guard of honour was presented.

Two Ansar members, who had presented the guard of honour to the national leaders on April 17, 1971 were also honoured.

After placing wreaths at the memorial, adviser Faruk-E-Azam had visited different parts of the Mujibnagar Memorial Complex and the Amrakanan here.

Secretary to the Ministry of Liberation War Israt Jahan, deputy commissioner of Meherpur district Sifat Mehnaz, superintendent of police Maksuda Akhter Khanam, and other officials concerned as well as people from different professions were present there.

Baidyanathtala, mainly a mango orchard, was later named Mujibnagar after ceremonial formation of the provisional government of Bangladesh.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was declared the first president of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, while Syed Nazrul Islam was appointed as the acting president in the absence of Sheikh Mujib.

Tajuddin Ahmed was appointed as the first prime minister, while M Mansur Ali and AHM Qamaruzzaman were named as cabinet members.

The government named general MAG Osmani as commander-in-chief of Mukti Bahini while it appointed Major General Abdur Rob as chief of staff.

The provisional government led the country during the War of Independence and achieved victory on December 16, 1971.
