A group of students has formed a 35-member shadow investigation committee to identify those directly and indirectly involved in the attacks on Dhaka University students during the July Uprising between July 15 and August 5, 2024.
The committee will prepare a white paper within the next month based on evidence identifying the attackers and will submit it to the university administration and the official investigation committee.
The list of the 35-member committee was announced at a press conference in the Dhaka University Journalists’ Association’s conference room on Thursday.
In a written statement at the press conference, Dhaka University law department student Rezwan Ahmed Refat said that following the attacks in July and August, the university administration expelled 128 individuals, of whom six were not DU students.
According to multiple media reports and witness accounts, hundreds of students took part in the attacks, said Refat.
‘Nearly eight months have passed since the July Uprising,’ Rifat said, adding, ‘We fear that evidence related to the attackers will gradually disappear and that is why we have formed this committee including victims and witnesses of the July events.’
He further stated that although there was sufficient evidence against many attackers, including Bangladesh Chhatra League’s DU unit general secretary Tanbir Hasan Shaikat, their names were excluded from the official list.
Also names of individuals not involved in the attacks were included, raising questions about the credibility of the official investigation, Refat added.
He further said that the main task of the shadow committee would be to gather evidence against those directly and indirectly involved in the attacks and publish a white paper within a month.
Among others, Dhaka University’s political science department student Rawnak Jahan, philosophy department student Sarder Nadim Mahmud Shuvo, and mass communication and journalism department student Najimuddin Saif were present at the press conference.
The committee includes Dhaka University students Smriti Afroz Sumi, Rezwan Ahmed Refat, Taposhi Rabeya,Nurul Islam Nahid, Rawnak Jahan, Ruhul Amin Robin, Abu Mishal, Zahed Hossain, Sarder Nadim Mahmud Shuvo, Nazimuddin Saif, Ahmed Tanvir, Arifur Rahman and others.
