A Rohingya youth was killed in an explosion inside Myanmar while catching crabs at Teknaf in the Naf River of Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar on Sunday afternoon.

The deceased is Md Zobair, 19, son of Abdul Hamid, of Jadimura area of ​​Hnila union of Teknaf upazila.


Two people were injured in this incident. They are Shah Alam, 30, son of Noor Kamal, of the same area and Shukkur, 24, son of Md Mestori, of Damdamiya BGB camp adjacent area.

Inspector Tapan Kumar Biswas, in-charge of the Teknaf River police station, said that three Rohingya youths went to the Naf River to catch crabs. At one point, they crossed the border line of the Naf River and went to the area called Laldia Char in Myanmar.

At one stage of crab catching, a mine buried in clay exploded with a loud noise. All of them were injured. They reached the waters of Bangladesh by floating in the water.

The police official also said that among the injured, Shah Alam and Md Shukkur returned home but were seriously injured. 

Zobair remained on the banks of the river. After getting the information, relatives rescued Zobair and brought him home. He died on the way to the hospital from there. Two injured were taken to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty sent them to Cox’s Bazar General Hospital.  In the explosion, Zobair’s right leg is completely blown from below the knee to the ankle.

Resident medical officer of Cox’s Bazar General Hospital Ashikur Rahman said that the two injured were sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

Teknaf police officer-in-charge Muhammad Osman Gani said that legal action would be taken after looking into the matter.

Earlier, on July 2, Mohammad Ayas, a Myanmar citizen, was killed in a landmine explosion on the other side of the border along Teknaf upazila. On June 22, another Myanmar citizen, Anwar, lost his leg due to a mine explosion at the Whykong border in the same upazila.
