Pakistan, in its first reaction to Bangladesh's political developments after the fall of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government following student protests, stated on Wednesday that it stood in solidarity with the people of Bangladesh.

‘The Government and people of Pakistan stand in solidarity with the people of Bangladesh, sincerely hoping for a peaceful and swift return to normalcy,’ the statement posted on the website of Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

‘We are confident that the resilient spirit and unity of the Bangladeshi people will lead them towards a harmonious future,’ the statement continued.

Following mass protests by students and ordinary citizens in Bangladesh, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India on August 5 after her brutal crackdown on the protesters failed.

Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus is expected to take the oath as the head of the interim government of Bangladesh on August 8.
