Eastern Bank PLC has filed a defamation lawsuit against its client Md Murtoza Ali, seeking Tk 200 crore in compensation.
According to a press release issued on Thursday, the lawsuit was filed with the first joint district judge court of Dhaka on Tuesday.
The court has taken cognisance of the case and issued a summon against Murtoza.
Earlier, Murtoza Ali, a customer of EBL鈥檚 Chandgaon branch in Chattogram, had submitted a petition to the chief metropolitan magistrate鈥檚 court in the port city, seeking to file a case against the bank鈥檚 board of directors, managing director, and 46 senior officials.
He alleged that EBL had embezzled Tk 11 crore.
In response, EBL stated that the accusation was baseless and, following media reports on the petition, proceeded to file the defamation lawsuit against Murtoza Ali.
