The Bangladesh Bank on Thursday allowed mobile operators to collect payments in the local currency taka for roaming services used by resident Bangladeshi travelers.

The BB issued a circular in this regard on the day.

According to the directive, mobile operators in Bangladesh can accept payments from a customer in taka, up to a maximum of Tk 6,000 per trip and Tk 30,000 over a calendar year.

Under the new rules, travelers must provide a valid visa and ticket and roaming services must be activated one week before departure.

The limits apply collectively across all mobile numbers and operators, preventing misuse.

For overseas payments to network operators, authorised dealer banks must follow strict documentation procedures, including verifying agreements, invoices, tax payments and customer details.

Mobile operators must also submit an undertaking confirming compliance with the Bangladesh Bank’s limits.

Previously, travelers could only pay roaming bills in foreign currency via international cards.

Industry experts welcomed the move, calling it a step toward enhancing convenience and promoting value-added services.

Banks have been instructed to process remittances through designated branches and notify the Bangladesh Bank upon completion.
