Three guards of Barishal central jail had been suspended in connection with the death of a mentally challenged prisoner while undergoing treatment in the prison cell of Barishal Sher-e Bangla Medical College Hospital.

Besides, two investigation committees had been formed and a departmental proceeding was initiated against the suspended guards, said Barishal central jail senior jail superintendent Ratna Roy on Monday.


Without giving further details about the incident that took place on Sunday, she said that the initial investigation had found evidence of negligence of duty of the guards.

Further action would be taken against the guards based on the report of the inquiry committees, she added.

On Sunday, prisoners – Motahar Hossain (60), accused in murder case and Ajit Mondal, accused in a theft case, were severely beaten with a steel stand of saline by Tariqul Islam, accused in another murder case at prison cell of SBMCH.

Later, the injured were admitted to the surgery ward of the hospital where Motahar Hossain died at 2:00pm on the day.
