
At least 77 people were killed and 109 more were injured in 70 road crashes across the country between April 10 and 14 amid the Eid-ul-Fitr vacations, according to the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority.
Subsequently on Monday, at least three people were killed in two separate road crashes in Gazipur and Dhaka.
Bangladesh celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr, the biggest religious festivals of the Muslims, on April 11.
The government employees had got three-day for Eid vacation from April 10 to April 12 as public holidays which were followed by a weekly holiday on April 13 (Saturday) and a public holiday on April 14 (Pahela Baishakh).
A BRTA statistics, published in its website, said that the highest number of people, 24, was killed in a single day on April 13, while the highest number of people, 37, was injured on April 10 and the highest number of road crashes, 19, took place on the Eid day (April 11).Â
The secretary general of Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh, a rights organisation working on road sector, Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury said that the alarming matter during this Eid holidays was fatal motorbike crashes.
‘In these crashes, mainly young boys were killed,’ he added.
Two people were killed and another was injured as their motorcycle hit a tree at village Parlakhshippur under Alamdanga upazila in Chuadanga about 2:30am on April 14.
The deceased are Khalid Hossain, 18, son of Sentu Mia and Tamim Hossain, 18, son of Ariful Islam, both were from Jhenaidah.
United News of Bangladesh reported that four people were killed and one was injured in a head-on collision of two motorcycles on the Zakiganj-Sylhet highway at Shahbag Muhipur area under Zakiganj upazila in Sylhet on April 12.
The deceased are Adil Hossain, 20, son of Aftar Ali, Zakaria Ahmed, 21, son of Zomir Ali, and Milon Ahmed, 20, son of Subhan Ali, residents of Zakiganj. Redwan Ahmed Fuad, 18, son of Raju Ahmed, of Beanibazar upazila, died on April 14 while undergoing treatment.
UNB also reported that two youths were killed and two others were injured in a head-on collision between a motorcycle and a battery-run auto-rickshaw in Bagha upazila of Rajshahi on April 12.
The deceased were Rony Sheikh, 24, son of Yunus Sheikh, of the upazila and Raju Ahmed, 20.
Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported that a motorcyclist and his pillion rider were killed and five more were injured in a head-on collision between their vehicle and a battery-run van at Nutonbandar area on the Debiganj-Sonaher Paka road under Debiganj upazila in Panchagarh on the Eid day.
The deceased are Sabbir Hossein, 16, and Kawser, 21, from Debiganj.
BSS also reported that Shanta Hossain, 20, son of Shadhu Mian, and Fahim Islam, 21, son of Akkash Ali, both from Poba upazila were killed when their motorcycle crashed into a road divider at Budhpara flyover in Rajshahi around 3:30pm on April 11.
Two people, including Alsaaf Matubbar, 22, son of Asad Matubbar, from Faridpur, were killed and two others injured when a motorcycle hit a roadside tree on the Narail-Lohagra road at Douatola under Sadar upazila in Narail on April 11.
UNB also reported that a couple was killed when a Tangail-bound Mahi Special Paribahan bus hit them while they were crossing the Dhaka-Tangail highway at Kaliakoir bypass area in Gazipur early Monday.
The deceased are Asif Mahmud, son of Mozammel Haque of Boroitoli village in Kaliakair upazila and his wife Tanjim.
Police sent the bodies to the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for autopsy, said Shahadat Hossain, officer-in-charge of Naojor Highway Police Station.
The bus was seized but the driver managed to flee, he added.
A 30-year-old rickshaw-puller died after being hit by an unidentified vehicle in Dhaka’s Gabtoli area on Sunday night. He succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at a Dhaka hospital early Monday.
The deceased is Rezaul, son of Ansar Ali of Uttar Katla village under Birampur upazila in Dinajpur, UNB also reported.
