Two cousins drowned in the River Gorai of Kumarkhali in Kushtia on Wednesday.

The deceased, Shefa, 13, and Shahzada, 7, were the residents of village Zainabad in the upazila.


Kumarkhali police station officer-in-charge M Aqibul Islam said that five children, including Shefa and her cousin Shazada went to take a bath in the River Gorai.

All of them jump together from the bank into the deep area of the river. Shefa and Shahzada both drowned as they did not know how to swim, he added.

After rescuing them, people of the area took them to Kushtia General Hospital for treatment where the doctors declared them dead, the police official said.

A team of Kumarkhali police recovered the bodies and sent them to the hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations, the OC added.

Shefa came to visit her grandfather鈥檚 house in Zainabad area on Friday.
