The bed shortage in children ward has turned worse in the Patuakhali Medical College Hospital as multiple patients were found taking treatment in one bed at the health facility.
Amid the ongoing heatwave, the number of children, suffering from pneumonia and diarrhoea, has increased as every ward, corridor and balcony is full of patients and 589 more were admitted on Saturday in the 250-bed hospital.
Children ward found the worst and three children are being treated in one seat in the hospital.
In the past one week, more than 100 children were admitted to the hospital with pneumonia and 235 patients with diarrhoea.
In the past 24 hours, 25 patients were admitted with pneumonia infections and 42 with diarrhoea. Rashida Begum, with her child Jannati, has been staying in the hospital for the past two days.
‘My daughter is suffering from pneumonia for the past few days. She is being treated here for two days. We have to share bed with two other children,’ she said.
Meanwhile, 94 patients, suffering from diarrhoea, are being treated on different floors in this hospital against 23 beds.
Assistant professor of the hospital Md Ahiduzzaman Shamim said that the environment of the children ward was unhealthy as three patients were being treated against each of the available beds.
On Sunday, more than 150 children were admitted against the 48 beds, he said, adding that children could not stay well or their mothers could not even sit in the bed, he added.Â
He said that there was no way to satisfy patients and their parents in such condition.
‘There is no shortage of treatment facilities, including injectable and oral saline. Patients are forced to stay on the floors due to bed crisis,’ said Dilruba Yasmin Liza, superintendent of the hospital.
