Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University vice-chancellor Professor Deen Md Nurul Haque called upon the country people to donate corneas after death.

He was speaking at a press conference at Martyr Dr Milton Hall organised Monday on the occasion of transplanting the corneas of the late Shib Narayan Das, one of the designers of the national flag of Bangladesh.


BSMMU and Sandhani National Eye Donation Society collected corneas from his eyes and transplanted them into the eyes of Mashiur Rahman of Rangpur and Abul Kalam of Chandpur.

People think that cornea donation causes removal of the eye ball and the distortion of face, but that is not fact, said the vice-chancellor.

The cornea can be collected in just 10 minutes, he added.

Pro-vice-chancellor (administration) Professor Md Saif Uddin Ahmed, pro-vice-chancellor (research and development) Professor Md Moniruzzaman Khan, pro-vice-chancellor (academic) Professor Mohammad Atiqur Rahman, registrar professor ABM Abdul Hannan, proctor Professor Md Habibur Rahman Dulal, anatomy department chairman and genetics and molecular biology professor Laila Anjuman Banu, Sandhani National Ophthalmology Association president Professor Monilal Aich Leetu, Ophthalmology Department chairman Professor Syed Abdul Wadud, Zafar Khaled, assistant professor of Community Ophthalmology Department, Sheesh Rahman, Ophthalmology Department assistant professor Rajashree Das, Geetasree Chowdhury, wife of Shib Narayan Das, his son Arnab Aditya Das, and teachers and students of Ophthalmology Department and Community Ophthalmology Department of the university and members and doctors of Sandhani National Ophthalmology Society were present on the occasion.
